Charcoal or Gas Barbecue?

Buying a barbecue it is an important purchase. With so much choice at Flaming Barbecues we want to get the most from your purchase.

Benefits of Gas Barbecues

  1. Quick and Easy to Start – Gas BBQs are east to set up. Just turn on the gas and push a button.
  2. Temperature Control – simply turn the knobs up or down to regulate the flow of gas to allow for optimum cooking conditions.
  3. Different Numbers of Burners – depending on the number of people you are catering for, you can have more of less independent burners.
  4. Additional Features – Side Burners for sauces, side tables and rotisseries make gas bbqs incredibly versatile
  5. Wood smoking – no longer the reserve of charcoal barbecues, smoker boxes make wood smoking easy
  6. Easy Cleaning – no ashes to deal with. Drip trays collect the mess and for the cooking area just turn on the heat to burn off any juices and use a wire brush.
  7. Cheap to Operate – either propane or butane cylinders are readily available. And one domestic sized bottle will last for up to 8 hours at maximum flow.

Downside of Gas Barbecues

  1. Usually there is a higher initial cost of a gas BBQ, however this is a broad range to choose from.
  2. Smoking kits and rotisseries come at an extra cost.

Benefits of Charcoal Barbecues

  1. Easy wood smoking – This is charcoal’s main selling feature over gas and you get that unmistakable summer bbq smell. (This can also be done with gas)
  2. Natural BBQ Flavour – The flavour of food cooked on a charcoal bbq is really delicious!
  3. Initial Cost – Charcoal BBQs can be very cheap to buy (depending on the model/brand)

Downside of Charcoal Barbecues

  1. Hard to start – it take quite a bit of effort to get charcoal bbqs started
  2. Slow heat – charcoal bbqs take 30-40 minutes he heat up so they are not ideal for an impromptu party.
  3. Timing – cooking must be done when the coals are at their hottest otherwise you need to start all over again.
  4. Heat Control – it is not possible to keep a consistent temperature or control the heat.
  5. Fuel costs – can be expensive to run through the bbq season
  6. Hard to clean – hot ash can be difficult to clean. You must clean the grate, brush the ashes and scrub burnt on food.
