Fire Safety

Fires kill many people every year. Many fires are started accidentally, either by negligence or due to a lack of knowledge of fire safety. Lives can be saved by following simple fire safety precautions and knowing how to protect oneself if a fire breaks out. Knowing how to prevent fires and what to do should they occur is important to secure the well-being of ourselves, friends, and family.

Fire Safety For Kids

Children should be taught from an early age about the dangers associated with fires. It is important for kids to understand that they should not play with matches or lighters, and that electrical outlets, heaters, stoves, and other things can pose a danger to them. It is also important for children to know what to do in the event of a fire. Children should be taught what to do if their house fills with smoke, and how to safely get out of a dangerous situation. In the event that their clothes should catch on fire, it is critical that children know to stop, drop, and roll to help put the fire out.

Fire Safety for Adults

Adults should understand general fire prevention and safety tips in order to help prevent fires in the home. It is important to be aware of the different ways that a fire can start, understand the function of safety measures, including smoke alarms and fire extinguishers, and how to escape a house fire. These are especially important to be aware of when children and elderly family members, who are most often the victims of fires, live in the home. Knowing how to protect the outside of a home and the surrounding property is crucial in areas where wildfires commonly occur. Adults who are knowledgeable about fire safety and what to do in the event of a fire can greatly increase their family’s chance of survival, and minimize their property damage should a fire occur.

Fire Safety for Seniors

Senior citizens need to be especially diligent with their fire safety precautions and planning, due to the unique circumstances that they generally find themselves in. Older people may have problems escaping a fire quickly because of their decreased reaction time and limited mobility, diminished senses, and/or medications they may be taking. Older adults should be careful if they smoke and should never smoke in bed, or while under the influence of medications and/or alcohol. Seniors should be careful when cooking and when heating their home, as these activities can be especially dangerous to seniors. Proper home maintenance and periodic checkups can help ensure a safe living environment. Most importantly, having clear access to exit routes, and having an escape plan in the case of a fire can provide the best chance for surviving a fire.
